What is your gyno telling you about herpes testing?

So, I’ve always tried to be careful in the past about not getting herpes in the past by getting regularly tested and asking my partners to do the same. It hasn’t really been an issue until now though. I’m dating a girl I really like, but her doctor and her gynecologist are telling her that since she doesn’t have symptoms, she shouldn’t get tested and that they actually will refuse to test her for the virus. What am I to think about this? I’m interested in what other women are hearing from their doctors.

    Gynecologists say that unless you highly suspect that you have it, and that you’re seeing symptoms, don’t get tested. I didn’t have any symptoms, but I asked my gynecologist if I could still get tested, and she had no problem doing the bloodwork…this girl’s story sounds a bit fishy to me. If she has health insurance (and even if she does not, places like planned parenthood will do it for free) then she should be able to test her. There is NO WAY they will refuse her, they aren’t allowed (UNLESS it poses a danger to her health, which I’m sure a needle won’t)

    it is true. it is highly inadvisable to get tested for herpes unless you have an out break. herpes is an infection that attaches itself to the nerves and once an infection attaches itself to the nerves it permanently becomes apart of your body and because the chicken pox and shingles are both forms of herpes, they are permanently apart of your body. if you get tested for herpes it will come back positive. so unless you have an out break, the doctors will deny your request for herpes.

    You can pay for her testing to the private agency, you can find them online, type STD testing, you pay by credit card and they will send her to the nearest Lab, the results will be by phone in a few days, so because you will be the one paying, you will know the phone# and confirmation # to get results.

    Have your partner ask her doctor about type-specific HSV serology and whether or not it is available in your area.
