Herpes help? Knowledge on Genital hsv2 herpes?

My girlfriend was doing some routine blood work and accidentally found out that she is positive for HSV-2 (genital herpes). I got tested to see if I had it too and I came back negative.

I love her, but we’ve gone through some rocky times and I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it over this hill. I’d appreciate any and all advice!

Edit: To answer some questions, she got it from a previous boyfriend she had (the virus is asymptomatic in some people), and she isn’t exactly promiscuous (only had sex with 2 other people). She’s just a bit unlucky, I guess.

    Since she found out she has HSV2 via a blood test, she really doesn’t know whether she caught it orally or genitally. It’s most likely that she caught it genitally, but who knows?

    One thing that you should know is that a big study was done with couples where one had genital HSV2 and the other did not. If the couples never EVER had sex during outbreaks (when symptoms were present at all), the rate of transmission was 6% PER YEAR. And if the infected partner took a daily antiviral – like Famvir or Valtrex, the transmission rate dropped to 3% per year.

    The real question is whether you see a future with this woman. If she was just a fun time, and you don’t think that the two of you will end up together, then perhaps even the small risk of herpes is too much to take. If, however, you really love this woman, and you think that the two of you might spend your lives together, I would think that this risk would not be too big.

    Ultimately, it is your choice – and don’t underestimate how difficult herpes is emotionally. It’s a difficult situation. I wish you luck.
