HSV2.For those of you that are on suppressive medication for HSV2.do you like Acyclovir or Valtrex better

    I don’t have Herpes, but a friend of mine does and he uses Valtrex. He said he hasn’t had an outbreak in 2 years!

    valcyclovir is metabolised to acyclovir by the liver. Technically speaking, valcyclovir and acyclovir are one in the same at this point. Neither are actually the active drug that prevents viral DNA synthesis. Acyclovir must be phosphorylated by viral then human kinase to its active form. The difference is the bioavailability of valcyclovir over acyclovir. Less dosage of valcyclovir is needed for treatment, hence the perceived higher effectiveness. The cost of valcyclovir is higher than acyclovir as its still under patent till 2009. To sum it up, you take less pills for more money. Other than that, they work identical.
